Website Editor • 19 May 2021

Gardens can get a lot of neglect over the winter months. It is best to try and get these jobs done before winter properly sets in.

Keep reading to find out our tips on how to transform your garden for the winter months that are coming up quick and fast!

Brighten up your garden with garden lights!

As we all know it gets dark pretty early in the winter. Brighten up your garden with some garden lights. You can get them for cheap from stores such as B and M and Home Bargains. Lights can really bring your garden together. You can now look out your window into a well lit garden, it will be sure to brighten your mood in the darker months.

Having lights in your garden will increase visibility and make it easier to find things later on in the evenings. They also create a warm sense of welcome believe it or not for when your friends and family come to visit.

Garden lighting actually provides a good sense of security too! By lighting particularly dark areas in your garden e.g. dark walkways, entryways, garages etc. Having these areas well lit can actually deter intruders.

Invest in a fire pit!

If you love sitting out in your garden, it can be upsetting to not use it for months. Invest in a fire pit, this will allow you to get the use of your garden in the winter. Firepits are a great way to unwind and relax in the evenings once you get home from work, you can just chill out in front of it and perhaps listen to some music to really relax you before bed! They are great for socialising around, you can socialise with your friends and family around the fire pit in the winter evenings.  Firepits are great to use all year round, you can you them throughout all seasons which is exactly what you want when it comes to an investment. You can also get inexpensive firepits, you don't have to break the bank, just do your research and find one that suits your budget and garden. You will not regret investing in a fire pit.

Brighten or perk things up with some paint!

By painting or staining furniture in your garden, it will instantly brighten it up and make it look like you’ve done up your garden. Adding a touch of paint to benches, plant pots, fences etc will really fix up your garden over the winter. Painting coming into the winter months is a perfect time to do it as in the summer it gets far too hot and the paint can sometimes get quite sticky which is not what you want.

The great thing about painting your fence is that if you paint it a colour that you are not too keen on you can always just repaint it with a colour you will love! Adding a bit of colour to your garden fences in the winter will definitely brighten up your garden against the grey clouds. You will not regret giving your garden a paint in time for winter.

Clear out compost bins!

Before it comes heavily into winter it is the best time to deal with and clear out your compost from the year before and use it around the garden for this year’s waste. At the time you decide to do this, if your compost isn’t quite ready you can always turn it to improve decomposition and create a new heap of it for fresh organic matter. If you like composting, it is  a great way to produce homemade food for your garden. Composting will help your plants to grow bigger and stronger, thus brightening and tidying up your garden.

Composting is great for the environment too! If we don't compost, these kinds of materials can just end up in landfills. If they end up here, they release harmful methane into the atmosphere. If we compost we cut back on emission and remove carbon from the atmosphere. Composting will enrich your garden!

Maintain your garden equipment!

Your garden tools will need sharpening and a good clean considering they will be put away until the springtime. However once you wash your tools, ensure that you dry them because if you store them away straight away this will cause them to rust and go bad which is something you do not want. Wooden handles can be cleaned, maintained and protected with linseed oil, however one piece of advice; dispose of rags carefully as linseed can combust as it dries. Maintaining your garden tools will increase their longevity, this is something you want as gardening tools and equipment can be expensive.

Once you are finished cleaning your tools and equipment, tidy up your shed (or wherever you keep them) and stock up on all of your gardening supplies, ready for the springtime. This will make things easier to find when it comes to needed them again.

Buy some winter plants and shrubs!

There is plenty of selection of plants and shrubs designed to survive the cold temperatures in the winter months. Organising and finding your plants new homes can be a bit of an autumn project for you before the temperatures drop. Having plants to decorate your garden will really brighten it up and tie the whole garden together.

If you invest in plants that are suitable for the winter, you will not have to worry about looking after them too much or worry about them getting ruined or dying over the colder months. You will save yourself some money in the long run which is always a bonus!
